Pethidine consists of an active ingredient known as pethidine hydrochloride. This agent belongs to a group of medicine known as narcotic analgesics (opioid pain-relievers).

Pethidine acts on specific opioid receptors in the brain, blocking the delivery of pain messages. In doing so, pethidine decreases the brain's awareness of the pain, thus providing pain relief.
